Welcome to June! This week we will have our final session in the workshop series, Engaging in English. In the first session we talked about some of the theory about bilingualism. In Session #2 we shared ideas about reading with our children in bilingual families and were joined by Aimee Dye Williams, Assistant Librarian at J.B. Nelson Elementary School in Batavia, IL.
Last week, in Session #3, Juan Fernando Olaya, the Head of the SGS Music Department, joined us in a conversation about creating a ecosystem of music in our families: listening to many kinds of music, asking family and friends what music they like, going to concerts and performances, and learning to play an instrument.
The world offers an infinite menu of music to all of us! You can think about music according to genres (classical, jazz, blues, pop, rock, etc.), by culture or nationality (Colombian, American, African, French, Caribbean, etc), by era/decade (music from the 19th century, music from the 1950s, contemporary music, old music), or according to instruments or specific musicians (cello, piano, drums; or U2, Yo-Yo Ma, The Beatles, Carlos Vives, etc). Consider how you choose from and enjoy a diet rich in lots of kinds of music! And have fun exploring, listening, dancing and playing music in your home.
For Session #4 – Traditions and Cooking in Bilingual Families, we will consider the traditions that we have inherited, celebrate and can create with our families, and share some easy recipes in English to prepare at home with our children.
If you participated previously – we will continue on Thursday 4 June (6:30 – 8:00 PM) or Saturday 6 June (9:30 – 11:00 AM) on Teams.
If you have not participated yet, but would like to join us, please send an email to lenis.rodriguez@sgs.edu.co and she will register you.
