This day aims to raise awareness about the vital role of wetlands for the planet and its people. Wetlands sustain a complex biodiversity that is necessary for the purification of water and air among other things. Saint George’s School has a wetland that is rich in flora and fauna and a natural reserve within the city.
SGS Wetland
Is one of the natural treasures of the School which is part of a wonderful ecosystem. It is full of native flora some of which has been reintroduced, (see Spanish version for the names). It also has a large population of water birds, many of which are migratory, (likewise see Spanish version for names).
The wetland forms part of a network of ecosystems that are fundamental to Bogotá and its surroundings. Furthermore, it helps to purify air and water and preserves the quality of the bordering soil. The wetland also prevents and mitigates flooding whilst it helps to regulate the climate.
For all these reasons it is vital to protect these ecosystems that are so important to all.
